T-1 Day: We Finally Meet

Right off the bat this morning at 8 AM we got back to work on the motorcycle trailer.  Dad and I met at the trailer store and laid out the dimensions for where the chocks and tie-downs were to be installed.  Then we started looking for a hitch for the car; the availability was not good.  Finally, I found one all the way out at the Volvo dealership in Syracuse (a 3 hr round trip).  This is where I spent the remainder of my afternoon.  Now we just need to install the brake controller.  Ryan conveyed equally frustrating complications with his efforts for the Ducati.  However we have a success path for two trailers to be wrapped up tomorrow morning and we can finally hit the road!

Ryan suggested that I call this posting “Murphy’s Law” based on the fact that we seemed to be running into every possible road block with the trailer.  How appropriate, except that there was a silver lining to the day; after several email communications, we finally met our new friends Carolina and Craig DeHond in person (be sure to read Carolina’s story under “CCS Friends”).  We have so much in common, and it was nice to finally talk; you’re a great couple!  Thanks for the road snacks.

    Dear Bret,

My heartfelt prayers are with you and your family. Sharing your story is both inspiring and terribly, terribly sad. God be with you in your travels.

  3. Carolina DeHond says:

    Hey Bret and Shannon!
It truly was a pleasure to finally meet you both! And your parents too! Our 2 hour conversation seemed as though it was only a few short minutes – a bit surreal – combinations of pleasant, enjoyable conversation punctuated by the frank, serious discussions of our mutual reality. You both seem very strong and your love for each other is very apparent.
We hope your first day on the road went smoothly – you’re all together and that’s what matters. We’ll be looking for your latest updates and pictures!
    Have a great time!
    Carolina and Craig

    Hey Bret,

I know we weren’t really ever friends per se, but I always had a lot of respect for you in school. I don’t know many people that can remain positive in the face of something like this the way you seem to be. You and your brothers were always very bright, inspirational, positive forces in high school. And here you are, continuing that tradition despite it all. I don’t really know what to say beyond that. Keep being extraordinary.

It’s great to see all of you smiling, motorcycle riding, and enjoying some great food. Keep it up and keep blogging. We’re with you all the way!

    Bret,

Saw a link to your blog on a friend’s Facebook Wall. So glad I did. Even though I don’t know you personally, your story moves me and helps keep life in perspective. Enjoy the sunshine and the warm breezes on the bike. God Bless you and your incredible wife, family and friends! You’re all in my thoughts and prayers.
